Packaging BarrelDuring long-distance transportation, calcium carbide is wet and will produce acetylene gas. Once there is an open flame, the acetylene gas can burn or explode, causing significant harm to employees. How to handle the acetylene gas inside the packaging barrel has become a bottleneck in the logistics transportation of the calcium carbide industry. Our company has gradually formed a mature quality control system for the export of calcium carbide based on the original practical nitrogen replacement, which can effectively reduce the concentration of acetylene gas in various particle size calcium carbide packaging barrels of 200-liter and 100-liter steel barrels.

When exporting calcium carbide, it needs to be packaged in steel barrels. Considering the safety of calcium carbide during transportation, storage, and use, the concentration of harmful explosive gases (acetylene gas) in the calcium carbide barrels is generally controlled below 1.0%. In spring and summer, the acetylene gas content in untreated calcium carbide barrels is generally above 1.5%, posing serious safety hazards.

1. Large Specification Calcium Carbide (Block)

For calcium carbide with a particle size greater than 25mm, we use nitrogen for replacement.Packaging BarrelTwo screw holes should be opened on the top, and the sealing gasket should be tight. When filling with nitrogen, unscrew the screw holes, insert the nitrogen filling tube into the bottom of the calcium carbide packaging barrel from one of the screw holes, and connect the liquid nitrogen to the nitrogen filling tube. The acetylene gas inside the barrel is discharged from the other screw hole. Under normal circumstances, after 1 to 3 replacements, the acetylene content in the calcium carbide barrel can be reduced to below 0.5%, which is very effective.

However, due to the influence of seasons and the temperature of calcium carbide, the nitrogen filling time is uncertain, and sometimes the effect is not ideal.

2. Experiments and Conclusions

Based on the factors affecting the concentration of acetylene gas in the calcium carbide barrel, which are influenced by seasons, calcium carbide temperature, and barrel quality, experiments were conducted on hot calcium carbide and cooled calcium carbide during the rainy season and other seasons. The experimental data collected is as follows.

It can be seen that during the rainy season, the number of replacements for acetylene gas in calcium carbide is more than in other seasons; the concentration of pyroxene temporarily decreases after nitrogen filling, then increases later; the airtightness of the calcium carbide barrel is very important for maintaining and reducing the concentration of acetylene gas.Packaging Barrel3. Small Particle Calcium Carbide (Desulfurized Calcium Carbide)

In steel production, it is relatively difficult to treat the acetylene gas in barrels of small particle calcium carbide used for desulfurization with nitrogen. After more than 15 nitrogen replacements, the acetylene gas content can be reduced to about 1.0%.

The main reason why conventional nitrogen replacement methods are difficult to reduce the concentration of acetylene gas is the particle size of desulfurized calcium carbide. The particle size of desulfurized calcium carbide is 0.2 to 3mm, formed by crushing and screening ordinary calcium carbide. The particle size is very small. During the production process, it easily absorbs moisture to generate acetylene gas and adsorbs on the surface of desulfurized calcium carbide particles. If nitrogen replacement is used, it can only handle the acetylene gas on the packaging barrel; the small particle size can easily block the nitrogen filling tube. Therefore, it is considered to use a baking method to allow acetylene to escape.

Heating the desulfurized calcium carbide in the barrel can effectively reduce the adsorption of acetylene gas by calcium carbide, increase the amount of acetylene gas released, and discharge it through the screw holes of the packaging barrel. The surface temperature of freshly produced calcium carbide piles can reach over 1000°C. During the cooling process, a large amount of waste heat is released. The desulfurized calcium carbide in the barrel can be baked next to the calcium carbide pile to achieve high-temperature heating. Therefore, the desulfurized calcium carbide packaging barrel is placed next to the hot calcium carbide pile for baking.
